How We Got Started
Beneath the Bible began around a kitchen table.
From our early stage as a podcast…
As with many new ventures, Beneath the Bible started around a kitchen table. A group of friends in graduate school were talking about a range of topics, from their studies, to shows they’ve been watching, to podcasts they’ve been listening to, and back to their studies. They all agreed they wanted to listen to a podcast that was more for them – something that combined archaeology and academic biblical studies discussed by real, trained experts with practical Christian living. But no such podcast existed. So, Kristen said “Why don’t we make one?” And from there Beneath the Bible was born.
…to our current stage as a YouTube channel…
Now the path forward was far from straight. Graduate students, it turns out, don’t have a lot of spare time to make podcasts. And recording podcasts is harder than it sounds. The team evolved as graduate school and career demands drew people away. Additionally, we learned the hard way that just because you’re knowledgeable about a subject doesn’t mean it’s easy to make it relevant and interesting to a wider audience. But with the addition of Kyle, Beneath the Bible was able to move closer to our original goals of bringing archaeological content in a way that’s relevant to Christian audiences with someone who can translate the academic-ese to something more practical! Finally, we realized archaeology is such a visually driven discipline we couldn’t adequately tackle the topics we wanted, the way we wanted to, without being able to show and discuss artifacts! So the podcast was paused for the time being and our focus turned to producing video content – with a lot more coming in the future!
